It’s OK To Quit

It’s okay to quit.

10 years ago, I started on a 4-year training contract to become a fully qualified, chartered accountant. I invested a lot into this job and, while all of my friends where living their best lives at university, I sacrificed any sort of personal life between the ages of 18 and 21 to focus on my professional career and passing my exams.

I got 3 ½ years in and had just three exams left to pass...  and I quit.

I just quit.

Why? I hated it. It was making me miserable. It was severely affecting my mental health and I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do anymore.

I realised that life is too short to do shit you don’t want to do.

So, the first week back to work in January 2016, I handed my notice in, made new plans and set myself new goals.

I landed a job in radio a couple of weeks later and, it was a job, career and an industry that I now absolutely LOVE and have been able to thrive in.

Quitting that first job and pivoting my career was a terrifying risk. But it was also one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Ever since then, I’ve lived by the mantra of “life is too short to do shit you don’t want to do” and honestly, it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to have conversations - with others and my myself - that might’ve been a bit tricky, but it’s meant that I no longer spend time doing things solely to please other people or to live up to others’ expectations.

So, for anybody else who might need to hear this, it’s really okay to quit.
